If you read my second message on the I'm new here board about this riddle you will understand why I am posting it. I will not post the answer to the riddle until either one of you gets it right, around 8 - 15 different users guess the answer. I was not trying to be mean to you Faalstar, I like Canada, I actually wish I lived farther north because I like living where it is cold.

Anyway here is the riddle:

Thaegan slurps her favorite food
in her cave with all her brood:
Hot, Tot, Jin,Jod,
Fie, Fly, Zan, Zod,
Pik, Snik, Lun, Lod,
and the dreaded Ichabod.
Each child holds a slimy toad,
on each toad squirm two fat grubs,
on each grub ride two fleas brave.
How many living in Thaegan's cave?

I await the responses.

Assuming there are no other living things other than the ones mentioned, that is.

Lief (who had been taught math at the forge) confidently adds up the numbers: 13 children, 13 toads, 26 grubs, and 52 fleas, totaling 104. Lief catches himself just before answering, and adds Thaegan herself, making 105. The Giant, however, informs him that the correct answer is 106; Thaegan had swallowed a live raven.

Unless you've read The Lake of Tears then you would answer 105. It's a trick question even in the book.

Yeah. No one would have gotten this unless they had read the book or looked it up online...

Which would therein somewhat defeat the purpose of the riddle since it relies on information that is not contained within the riddle itself. I'm sure there is some purpose behind this in the book (which I have not read), but outside of the book it renders the exercise pointless.

You are completely right on this, and that is also why I do it. I hope you are not mad at me for doing so I just wanted to see the responses.

You like doing pointless exercises just to see people's responses? -__-

Yes and no. Did you not read why I tell people Thaegan's riddle which I put on the I'm new here page. I already know that Faalstar read it and I actually posted this seconds after Faalstar read that same post and apologised.

I can't be bothered sifting through that thread but honestly... do you just post this riddle so that people add up the living things listed and when they say 105 you get warm fuzzies because you intentionally left out a piece of information which is vital to getting the "correct" answer?

That's... certainly an interesting way of entertaining yourself.

If I remember correctly, Lief gets pissed at the giant for misleading him, too. You're better off asking the riddle which was given to Barda.

"What is it that beggars have, that the rich need, and that the dead eat?"

Oh! That's clever! I like that riddle.

I thought it could be life because:

A.) Being a beggar they have/are nothing and need things (life) to continue on. <--Hard to explain my reasoning.
B.) Rich people need a life, to use a common idiom, because all they care about is money and not their lives.
C.) Zombies eat the living.

I prefer the metaphorical as opposed to the logical when it comes to riddles.

Exhibit A:

A silent lake that holds no fish
That tells you what you want to know
Her water pure and ice divine.
Beware her sweet tales of glory,
And know that should you cleave her heart in two
Ill fate shall follow you like a flock of crows.
