Legend of the Sacred Sword - Boardgame

Post by Lotus » Wed Mar 13, 2013 11:43 am

So guys, I know it's been a while, but you get an exclusive as the Seikens game series has been such a HUGE influence on this project so far, and will continue to do so long into the future.

I am designing a complete board game which will be known as Legend of the Sacred Sword. This is to be a fantasy rpg in a board game, with 6 playable characters and about 9 different monsters; which doesn't sound like a lot, but it's plenty for the first set. It will include a series of outdoor game tiles with appropriate monsters and treasure. The game will be played by having on person being a Game Master and running adventures out of a quest book that will detail a campaign that will ultimately go across the game world collecting rare artifacts and saving the world in traditional jrpg fashion. The other players (up to 4 officially, though more could probably be made to work) will take the roles of the intrepid heroes, killing various bad guys, finding old men in the forests to get cool items and information, rescuing girls from goblins, etc.

The first set details the Kawa Forest and will come with about 15 separate quests, though I'll probably have some PDF supplements with extra missions online. 6 double-sided maps which can be configured in different ways to create your adventures environment. As I said above there are 9 different monsters, each with 2 variants (which in traditional RPG fair be recolors) with multiples of most monsters. 6 Heroes that will have leveling options all the way up to 5, though there is no way they should make it past level 3, a big variety of spells and skills for them to learn. Should be pretty exciting stuff.

These are some of the Prototype tiles I designed myself, the art is a bit rough but it does give the overall impression of what I hope to accomplish with the game tiles.

Right now I have a majority of the games mechanics designed, and will begin the Alpha testing within the month. Beta testing will hopefully go out towards the end of the summer, which is part of why I post here. I'd like to get at least one of you guys to beta test, preferably one of you with a few friends who would be willing to play with you. You'll get a hand made copy of the game (though it may have placeholder art and such depending on how far art development is at that point) and everything you need to play, I'd just ask that you report back to me after every session with your players thoughts, if it is fun, too hard or too easy, etc.

Also, looking for some artists, while I have a character artist that will be handling all the basic art for each hero and monster, I will need artists to do all the treasure cards, all the equipment cards, map tiles, tokens, page backgrounds, etc. There is a ton of art to be done and I'd like to have most of it finalized before beta testing. I am paying for all this art out of pocket so not rich here, just what a working stiff can afford. So depending on what you want to charge me, I may request you be rather slow.

Some really preliminary character sketches, these are just the outfits for the artist to use as reference for when she does the final drawings. I do have a 6th character, but I'll need to work out a different doll for him as he's rather tall and plump.

It kinda seems similar to my Seiken Densetsu d20 project. Overall, nice work!

Well, to be fair, it's not just a source book or an addition to the d20 engine (Not that I'm trying to knock your work, it's just a different style game), it has it's own game mechanics and has everything built in. It is meant to be much more board game and less RPG, though with many RPG aspects. There are also going to be miniatures available for purchase to match the standees that will come in the game. But overall it's meant to be the complete package. Still, it's going to be a long road and I have lot of work to do with another company before I can really get rolling too far with this. I've been writing a game for a small miniatures company Impact! miniatures for their Chibi D&D style line.

This sounds pretty neat, the map reminds me of Link to the Past so far. I like your character sketches too.

I'd really like to be able to try to test this out, but unfortunately grad school keeps me too busy to be able to do this, and I don't think I could get more than one person to join me around here. I hope you find someone to test it out, and I'd love to see updates on it.

I've been super busy, so progress on this has been slow.

However, here is the Maldrazi Rogue character.

And here is my mascot enemy the Wobble Pod.

The eyes on the wobble pod kinda throw me off, too anime style human for me, but I really like it as far as a mascot character goes. I think mascot characters are pretty hard to come up with since you probably want them to be kinda simple. Gonna have stronger variants that are budding and flowering like Pikmin do? Maybe some raddish or pumpkin looking ones?

Well, for now, no. Any variants will be recolors. But, I intend to launch the game via Kickstarter, in which I will be using overfunding to make more art if I can and increase the quality of components as much as possible. So if I overfund enough, each variant will have unique art based on the original.

Also, Leonine Monk, and the Scythe Bug are in.

And finally I did a few test games the other day, but I almost forgot to take pictures and such, but I did get a couple and made a little right up on my gaming blog.

Also I made up a Facebook page where I have some color variants and other information.

Man it's been forever since I started this freaking game! I am still working on it, we have solid mechanics and are working through a lot of the gritty hard stuff right now. Here are some pics of the WIP version.

We have a group on Facebook where you can follow the game development as well as the miniatures development (miniatures will be a separate project, the game will come with standees for cost factor)

Here is a look at a couple of the miniatures though.
