Actually the starting bid was 5,000 dollars! I e-mailed the guy back and forth a few times and he said he wasn't going to let it go for less than 10,000 though, because the Nintendo Power contest it was involved in had it valued at 12,000. He had a reserve set on it.
I entered that contest and thought I had a good chance at winning, but my last entry for the tie breaker round (we had to write an essay, seriously) apparently never made it to Nintendo because I didn't even get the consolation prize I was supposed to get.

There was no winning bid and the auction ended with the guy keeping the item. I still have his e-mail but it is no longer registered so there is no telling where the guy is.
