Instant Messangers
Hey,
I use Windows Live Messenger (MSN) as my only REAL means of chatting with friends. I also use Xfire but mainly for some internet friends who I used to game with and really just to keep track of my gaming hours. I have a Yahoo! account and therfore I have the Yahoo! Messenger built into my account (not an actual client).
End result? If we all use Gaim, we're set.
Peace,
manaman

I use MSN a little bit, not as often as I used to. I used to use AIM a lot too but I haven't touched that one in years now.
An IRC channel would be cool, that idea was toyed with before though, dunno if we have enough people to keep one going, haha, but I'm sure I'd kick around in there if we made one.

It's free from Computer -to- Computer.
It's not free from Computer to telephone, or vice versa.
Not sure about multi-client conversations though.
Even then, I agree with Kassiday that the best option thus far is a IRC channel....
If we were really adventurous, we could always setup a Vent server or Teamspeak

But why would you want to use a messanger to call somoene's telephone?Faalstar wrote:It's free from Computer -to- Computer.

As for Skype Conferences (voice chat with 2 or more people), I do it all the time. Its really cool.

Because the whole idea behind VoIP in the first place was to replace conventional telephone lines with internet broadband.
I'm not saying that I want to use my computer to call someone's telephone, but thanks to the miracle of today's technology, you can use your telephone over the network with a "little magical box" (Sipura, etc) instead of having to use a computer.
If we were going to use speech, i'd rather use Ventrilo server personally.

I absolutely can't stand speech. I much prefer text.
I'm on dial-up anyway, so I wouldn't want to go through the convoluted process of voice chat when I have a much faster, less-distorted option available to me.
Honestly, if we're going to do anything, I recommend IRC. For my own client I use mIRC. The trick is getting everybody onto the same server all at once, though - shouldn't be too hard if everyone gets their hands on a program for it.
mIRC is free, by the way. I'd link, but you can google it.
