Bastian from our Seikens forums, together with two friends, Travis and Rick, have started a Let’s Play of Seiken Densetsu 3. This run uses the English translation patch and the 3-player input patch, and you can expect regular episodes to be coming to you twice a week. We’ll be doing our best to post them here on the homepage.
His channel also provides lots of gaming news content and gaming rants, and will be of particular interest if you’re a follower of Nintendo and the Zelda series, so you should head on over and subscribe.
Tool Assisted Speed-runs are those done with the assistance of programs that allow the player to re-record segments, edit them, time actions on a frame by frame basis to manipulate luck, and all sorts of other funky things that wouldn’t strictly be possible when playing normally. The aim of these is to get to the end of the game, from a clean state, as quickly as possible, though sometimes speed is sacrificed for entertainment value.
While very often this is seen done for platformers, it isn’t limited to that genre alone. In this case, SD3 has finally been TASed, and completed in just under 3 and a half hours by praetarius3. When watching the video, turn on closed captions in YouTube to get some background as to what is going on, as this plays on a non-patched version of the game.
Racket Boy, a website devoted to retro gaming, did an article on games that pushed the limits of the SNES not too long ago, and wouldn’t you know it two of my favorite games are featured in the article!
It’s an interesting read, and they’ve done this feature for a few other systems too. Check it out, you might learn something new about some games you love!
The Remixes page is back in action, and in perfect timing (gee golly what a coincidence, huh?), as a new Seiken Densetsu remix has just been posted on OCRemix: Starlight Festival – Kiamet, a wonderful solo piano rendition of Powell from Seiken Densetsu 3 that brings across a sense of urgency through its Latin influence in style. The playing is very precise and includes some very nice harmonies and added textures on top of the original melody. The sound quality is exceptional.
Square Enix are soon to be releasing an album of chiptune versions for songs from several of their later gen titles. SQChips will include songs from Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu 3. Among other titles of interest are Chrono Trigger, several Final Fantasy games, and a couple from the Saga series. The album is due out on September 7 for ¥1890, and will be available from Amazon Japan, the Sony Music Shop and the Square Enix eStore.

Courtesy of our affiliate, Square Palace, we bring you information regarding the pre-release press sample cartridge for Seiken Densetsu 3. While locked down rather tightly, it does offer a little insight in to a couple of bits that didn’t make it into the final game, and makes for some interesting research. Not sure I’d personally go out of my way to invest $200 in sourcing a cartridge of this nature though.

Mana Music Monday indeed, I’ve got another music update for you today.
What is Songs of Light and Darkness exactly? Well it’s that SD3 fan remix project I’ve posted about before!
Seems rozovian, the guy behind the project, has a preview track ready. Try to pick out the tracks before reading them in the cut, it’s pretty fun and I failed miserably at recognizing stuff, haha. I always knew I was bad with picking out tunes, but one out of five? For shame Sheexy, for shame! Anyway, it’s a short preview but it all sounds really good!

Something about those sharp drum parts just make me think Seiken Densetsu 3, they seem to be used in lots of the tracks. I never realized but Secret of Mana has a lot of that too, but I think it’s more prevalent in SD3. Maybe, oh I dunno, because there are so many more tracks? Haha.
