This news is old and might contain broken links and/or images.
Sorry for any inconvenience!

Well, I finally managed to get my hands on one of the rarest pieces of Seiken Densetsu Merchandise there is.
This super rare book was printed in 1998 and contains 96 pages of completed illustrations from Seiken Densetsu 3’s character artist Nobuteru Yuki, as well as many rough sketches some of which never made it any further. A few pages at the end contain short comics by a few guest artists as well as Nobuteru Yuki as well.

This is the book cover with its jacket on. The jacket has words on it and is see through like frosted glass.

Continue reading to see a few more pictures from the book, as well as some more information on it.

After taking off the jacket you can see that the cover is a blurred version of the illustration used for SD3’s box.

The pages on the inside are thick and glossy, the first section contains images of the main characters. It starts with a big page of text with the character’s name and kingdom with a painted scene of part of the character’s intro story opposite it. After that it has a page with some information about the character’s first design, and then on the page after that it has two of the character’s class changes and information about them.

After all of the main characters there is a section with “other characters” including a few of the villains and pictures of Flammie and Booskaboo.

After that section comes the rough sketches section that includes the original roughs for all of the illustrations featured in the book, as well as a few sketches that never made it past the rough draft page.
In the picture below notice the sketch of Riesz on the right page is never seen completed, and also the picture of Koren and Duran below it is from a different perspective than the completed one. There are a few interesting differences in some of the other sketches too.

And finally at the end there are a few pages of comics. The first two pages are by guest artists Yukiwo Kure and ‘A’ Key Sibusawa whom I know nothing about. The first guest artist is probably Yuki Kure instead of Yukiwo, and the Sibusawa should be romanized as Shibusawa, but I cannot find anything about the second person and have never heard of the works of the first.
Then the final pages are a comic by Nobuteru Yuki, and here is an example:

I know all of these photos are terrible at best, I’m terrible at photography, but hopefully I will be able to get these scanned someday in the future.
Given the rarity of the book I’m not going to go anywhere near bending the spine, so I’ll have to find some sort of hand scanner or something to get this done.

Nice! Congratulations! Thanks to your site, I discovered the existence of this book. After much scouring, I managed to pick up a near-mint second-hand copy for myself too a few months ago. Now begs the question, any chances of you doing a full translation of all the text inside? 🙂 🙂

  9. Sheexy Says:

I’d love to translate it, but I’m too busy at the moment. I’ll take a whack at it sometime in the future for sure though.

At the moment I don’t have a way to scan the book without damaging the binding, but if I can find a hand scanner or something I would definitely get the whole thing scanned.
