These cards belong in the Character Deck, and have their own unique backing. Like in other trading card games, Characters exist to fight for you. The rulebook requires the Character Deck have 8 different Character cards in it. 24 Character cards were printed for the Legend of Mana Card Duel collectible card game. If a Character is trashed, they are placed in a discard pile separate from cards in the main deck. When a turn starts and you have less than 3 Characters on the field in your Party, you must draw and play cards from the top of your Character deck until you have 3 Characters in play. When all of your Character cards have been trashed and your Character deck has no cards left, you lose the game.
Like Monsters, Characters use STR and DEF stats as damage and hit points respectively. Damage is not cumulative, and is cleared after each battle. If a Character dies in combat, it is moved to the trash.
During the Main Phase a player may choose to have their untapped Characters attack both Face Up and Face Down Monsters. Multiple Characters may attack a Monster together in this manner. After the battle resolves, the attacking Characters become tapped.
When Monsters attempt to move onto a player’s Lands, they may block the movement with any untapped Characters of their choice. Once again, Characters become tapped after the battle resolves.
When Monsters attempt to attack a party such battles may be avoided by letting them “through”, in which the attacking player will receive 1 of the defending player’s Available Mana. If this cost cannot be paid, at least one Character must fight the Monster. Characters that partake in these battles do not become tapped afterwards, and Characters that are already tapped may block the opponent’s Monsters. Tapped Characters participating in these battles are treated as though they have STR 0 and have no benefits from any non-Support or Artifact abilities or effects they would otherwise have.
Characters may have various Special Skills that influence the game. Special Skills with a symbol at the beginning indicate that the Character may be tapped to activate an effect at specific times. Becoming tapped for any other reason does not activate this effect.
Some Characters have Synchro effects that give bonuses to STR, DEF, or both when another Character is in the same party.
Characters can typically use one Item, but some cannot or may be limited to only using specific Items. These limitations or abilities are described in the Equipment Remarks. When an Item card is equipped to a Character that already has an Item equipped, the original Item is trashed and the new Item takes its place. Golems are special in that they can equip any number of Items, but cannot activate their effects.
