The part about the animations is really one of the things I love so much about the Mana series. They put so much detail into all the enemies and all the character movements.
As you temper the weapons the attack animations they can use actually changes, it's in one of the Japanese manuals I have, but each of the moves has a name. They put a ton of thought into how active the battles feel.
