I'm pretty sure I've heard of it, it's called Secret of Mana Extended, if I recall. It's one of Fusoya's products. It's pretty much just a buffing-up of Secret of Mana's rather dry dialogue. You can see a few screenshots here. Provided that's what you're talking about. Am I wrong?

That's fine. I can easily enjoy non-RPG games. It's a bit unusual of Square-Enix, though. They seem to be addicted to making RPGs and nothing but RPGs, to the point where they can implant RPG mechanics even in to fighting games. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up making a RPG/Racing game.
