I don't even see how that comparison could be made with having just played one game. Aside from the basic real-time-hack-and-slash aspect, there is no similarity between Secret of Mana and one of the Zelda games.
It's not only that... It's the fact that it's described as a "Japanese form of Zelda", which is utterly stupid in that Zelda was created in Japan too. This person, for all his "studying" these games appears to be under the impression that Zelda is a US creation.
I'm afraid I cannot help but quote Mr. Don Kanonji on this one... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Apparently the quality of research has dropped significantly. Which says a lot in this case, cause everyone links Zelda with nintendo, and nintendo with Japanese gaming.
Shows that who ever made that review, REALLY needs to do some actual gaming.
Well, that guy is definately a doofer. I mean, they're BOTH Japanese games for FSM sakes!
However . . . Mana IS very Zelda. I mean that in a good way, since I'm a huge fan of both.
FFA obviously tried their damnedest to copy the original Legend of Zelda (but made MANY wonderful improvements!). SoM/SD3/LoM followed suit with trying their take on A Link to the Past. And Dawn of Mana reminds me a LOT of Wind Waker . . .
Just . . . wow. . . . I don't know what to say to that. It's ridiculous how many people mess up the details of this series. I saw a really good YouTube video (read: good technical skills) that attempted to run through the history of the series, but it was utter rubbish and led to all sorts of comments about various games really being the start of the series and ticking them off as all sorts of weird names. they even called Dawn of Mana "Seiken Densetsu 5!"
Ah, well. In any event, the oddness of calling it a "Japanese form of Zelda" has already been covered, so I won't let this "author" have it with my whip of doom . . . unless he tries anything else!
No no no. Mana is nothing like Zelda. I can actually get somewhat far in the Mana games! I like levelup systems, and finding hearts doesn't constitute a level up to me.

Oh I can remember that debate. Glad I switched sides, or nothing would have been accomplished. XD
