For the Playstation debut of the Mana series, Square brought on board well established composer Yoko Shimomura, who had in the past worked on such titles as Breath of Fire, Street Fighter 2 and Parasite Eve. Regarded as possibly the strongest soundtrack of the series, she took full advantage of the CD Quality audio that the PlayStation had to offer and made use of live orchestration and even vocals to bring the songs to life.
The credits of this orchestration include Sanae Hatori (piano), Shinozaki Group (strings), Takashi Asahi (panflute), Kenzi Nagashima, Yasushi Sugiyama (piano), Osamu Katsumori (guitars), Yoshiyuki Kuriyama (bass), Kiichirou Akui (drums), Akira Fujiyama (panflute), Cavyn Wright Group (strings), with vocals performed by Saki Mizutani (CD1 Tracks 14 and 17) and Annika (CD1 Track 4 and CD2 track 32).
Overall an incredibly solid soundtrack that covers many different moods and styles, aided of course by the top-notch quality of the technology at Shimomura’s disposition. Heroes of Mana aside, we can only hope to see further collaborations from this composer as the series develops.
